How to Prepare Your Driveway for a Dumpster Delivery
By Dumpster Doctor • January 15, 2026
You booked your dumpster and the delivery is scheduled. Now what? A few minutes of preparation before the trailer arrives can prevent headaches, protect your driveway, and make the whole rental process smoother. Here is a straightforward checklist for Des Moines homeowners getting a dumpster delivered to their driveway for the first time.
Step 1: Clear the Drop Zone
The most important step is making sure there is nothing in the way. Walk out to your driveway and look at the spot where you want the dumpster placed. Remove everything from that area:
- Move your vehicles. Park cars in the garage, on the street, or at a neighbor's. The delivery driver needs a clear path to back the trailer in.
- Relocate trash cans, recycling bins, and yard waste bags. Anything sitting along the driveway edge should be moved temporarily.
- Clear bikes, toys, tools, and lawn equipment. Anything on or near the driveway that could get bumped or block access needs to go.
- Move planters, garden hoses, and decorations. Items along the driveway edges are easy to overlook but they get in the way during delivery.
The goal is a wide-open stretch of driveway from the street to the intended drop point. The less the driver has to navigate around, the faster and safer the delivery goes.
Step 2: Check Overhead Clearance
Look up. Seriously. Our trailer-style dumpsters are only about 4 feet tall, but the delivery vehicle needs overhead clearance for the full length of your driveway. Check for:
- Low-hanging tree branches. Trim any branches that hang lower than about 12 feet over the driveway. This gives plenty of room for the pickup truck and trailer to pass underneath.
- Power lines and utility wires. These should not be an issue at normal driveway height, but if you have sagging lines near your driveway entrance, flag them for the driver ahead of time.
- Garage door clearance. If the dumpster is going near your garage, make sure the door can still open and close. You will likely want garage access while the dumpster is there.
- Basketball hoops. Portable hoops near the driveway are easy to forget and hard for the driver to see. Move them out of the way.
Step 3: Confirm Access Width
Our trailers need approximately 10 feet of width for delivery. Most standard driveways in the Des Moines metro are 10 to 12 feet wide, which is sufficient. However, some older homes or narrow lots have driveways closer to 8 or 9 feet wide.
If your driveway is on the narrow side, measure it. If it is under 10 feet, text us a photo at (515) 490-8027 and we will confirm whether delivery will work or suggest an alternative placement.
Also check for obstructions that narrow the usable width: retaining walls, fence posts, mailboxes at the end of the driveway, or landscaping that encroaches from the sides.
Step 4: Protect Your Driveway Surface
One of the advantages of Dumpster Doctor's trailer-style dumpsters is that they are much lighter on your driveway than traditional roll-off containers. Our trailers ride on rubber tires and are delivered by a standard pickup truck—no heavy-duty truck rolling onto your concrete or asphalt.
That said, if you have a newer driveway, freshly sealed asphalt, or a decorative surface that you want to keep pristine, here are a couple of extra precautions:
- Place plywood sheets under the trailer tires. Two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood under the tires distribute weight and prevent any possible marks. This is optional for most driveways but a good idea for surfaces you want to protect.
- Avoid placing the dumpster on a slope. Flat placement is safest. If your driveway is sloped, let us know in advance and we will make sure the trailer is secured properly with wheel chocks.
For reference, our 15 yard dumpster trailer weighs significantly less than a traditional roll-off container, and the rubber tires are far gentler on surfaces than the metal skids used by roll-off dumpsters.
Step 5: Mark the Spot and Communicate Placement
Decide exactly where you want the dumpster before delivery day. Think about:
- Proximity to the work area. The closer the dumpster is to where the debris is coming from, the less you have to carry. If you are cleaning out the garage, place it right next to the garage door.
- Rear door access. Our trailers have easy-open rear doors for walk-in loading. Make sure the back of the trailer is not blocked by a wall or fence so you can open the doors and walk debris straight in.
- Vehicle access. If you need to get a car in or out of the garage during the rental period, position the dumpster so it does not block your path.
When you book with Dumpster Doctor, include a note about where you want the trailer placed. You can also text us a photo of your driveway with an "X marks the spot" and we will make sure the driver puts it exactly where you want it.
Step 6: Tell Us About Any Special Conditions
Every driveway is a little different. Let us know ahead of time if you have any of the following so we can plan accordingly:
- A steep driveway or grade change
- A gate or fence that limits access
- A shared driveway with a neighbor
- A gravel or unpaved surface instead of concrete or asphalt
- An HOA that requires specific placement (behind the house, not visible from the street, etc.)
The more we know ahead of time, the smoother your delivery day will be. We deliver dumpsters across the entire Des Moines metro—from older neighborhoods near downtown to newer developments in Waukee and Ankeny—and we have seen just about every driveway configuration. Check our size guide for trailer dimensions so you can measure your space in advance.
